The live, two-day online course began by outlining the needs and experiences of women veterans in more depth, and provided mental healthcare clinicians with foundational training in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
CPT is an evidence-based trauma-focused intervention for the treatment of PTSD and related conditions in adults. It was originally developed to treat PTSD resulting from sexual trauma. A systematic review of published research found that CPT had the largest evidence base for treating PTSD resulting from military sexual trauma in women veterans. CPT is a recommended individual trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy under the NICE guidelines (1.6.16, NICE, 2018).
The course was facilitated by Dr Candice M. Monson, one of the original co-authors of CPT.
Participants received instruction in the theoretical underpinnings of CPT to facilitate individual case conceptualisation, session-by-session review of the protocol, demonstrations with video-recorded materials from actual cases, personal experience with the therapy materials through role-plays, and discussion of common problems encountered.
Further information on CPT can be found at Candice Monson, PhD , Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD: Second Edition: A Comprehensive Therapist Manual and by searching online for CPT training.
This course is only appropriate for registered mental healthcare professionals working with women veterans. Participants should have prior foundational knowledge of cognitive behavioural therapy.
Please note that to participate in this workshop you must first complete the online course Introduction to women veterans’ experiences and needs.
